The Alternative: A Strengths-Based Approach to Escaping Poverty

In 2017, Mauricio Miller, founder of the Family Independence Initiative, released his powerful book The Alternative.  Reflecting on his own life and professional experiences, he challenges traditional social services, which he says are based on the assumption that low-income families “need to be saved”.  He makes a compelling case for “The Alterative”, which is to invest in people’s demonstrated strengths rather than their weaknesses. The evidence provided shows that families, when working together with a network of peers, create sustained positive change in their own lives. Recognizing low-income families as contributors in society begins to break the negative stereotypes that help keep people in poverty.  Find access to the book and other resources here:
